The Quesnel Community Foundation was established in 2001 as a legacy of the 2000 BC Winter Games, beginning with a $50,000 contribution from the Games itself and a matching gift from the City of Quesnel. With guidance from the Vancouver Foundation and the framework of Community Foundations of Canada, it has grown its endowment steadily, surpassing $6 million by 2025, with total grants awarded exceeding $1 million since the Foundation's inception. Administered by a twelve member Board of Directors and community-based grant and scholarship committees, its operations reflect a commitment to local autonomy paired with provincial and national best practices .
The Foundation's mission is to foster a vibrant community by partnering with donors and local not-for-profit organizations, using the annual returns from its permanent endowment. Key values, such as integrity, diversity, volunteerism, and inclusiveness, inform a funding process that supports projects spanning health, education, the arts, the environment, social programs, as well as sports & recreation. By inviting donors to contribute to named or community endowment funds, the Foundation ensures sustainable, long term support.
Beneficiaries include a wide spectrum of groups: the North Cariboo Seniors' Council, Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts, Special Olympics BC, Quesnel, King Dog Sports Club, Hospice and Palliative Care associations, hospital auxiliaries, heritage museums, rural playgrounds, environmental programs, and many more. From equipment upgrades to community-building events, the Foundation takes pride in its impact across community sectors. As it seeks new donors, the Foundation invites Quesnel residents to invest in a legacy of positive change by empowering local organizations well into the future.
